Weight Problems Start Early

Posted by george

I have always been a rather big boy through my childhood. My eating habits have always been pretty much the same, I eat a lot. A new study shows how important it is to start watching your weight and what you eat at an early age. We have always thought that chubby kids “grow out” of their weight problem when they get older, but this study shows that isn’t completely true. The risk of becoming overweight at a later age are many times higher in “larger” kids than slim ones. With all the bad food served at schools these days we have a lot to change! Here is the article:

Children were considered overweight if their body-mass index was in the 85th percentile or higher for their gender and age. That means they were heavier than at least 85 percent of children their same age and sex.

“These results suggest that any time a child reaches the 85th percentile for BMI may be an appropriate time for intervention,” the researchers wrote.

“These findings underscore the need to maintain a healthy weight beginning in early childhood. Contrary to popular belief, young children who are overweight or obese typically won’t lose the extra weight simply as a result of getting older,” said Duane Alexander, di rector of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which funded the study.
